The final steps of alteration leading to the formation of copper oxide minerals, such as malachite or chrysocolla (a silicate), depend mainly on the composition of gangue or fluid. The iron liberated during the alteration sequence can remobilize to form goethite or limonite. These iron oxides and hydroxides are particularly prejudicial for flotation if they precipitate on the surface of the copper minerals
